The Silverado Breakdown

Four Engines. One Serious Tow Truck.

The Silverado 1500 gives you four distinct powertrains. The right choice depends on what you're towing, how often you tow and where you drive.

Engine Horsepower Torque Max Available Tow* Best For
2.7L TurboMax
Turbocharged Gas I-4
310 hp 430 lb.-ft. Up to 9,500 lbs. Utility trailers, landscaping equipment, smaller campers and recreational towing.
5.3L EcoTec3 V8
Gas V8
355 hp 383 lb.-ft. Up to 11,400 lbs. Boats, campers and equipment trailers.
6.2L EcoTec3 V8
Gas V8
420 hp 460 lb.-ft. Up to 13,200 lbs. Larger campers, boats and demanding gasoline towing.
3.0L Duramax
Turbo-Diesel I-6
305 hp 495 lb.-ft. Up to 13,300 lbs. Frequent towing, highway travel and buyers who value diesel torque.

Which Silverado engine is right for you?

If you tow occasionally, the TurboMax can provide plenty of capability. If you prefer a traditional V8, the 5.3L and 6.2L offer increasing levels of gasoline power. If you tow frequently or spend long days on Pennsylvania highways, the 3.0L Duramax is worth a closer look.

Built for Northeast Pennsylvania

Towing Here Is Different.

Hazle Township drivers deal with hills, winter weather, highway travel and a mix of work and recreation. Your tow vehicle should be ready for all of it.

Hills and Mountain Roads

A trailer that feels easy on flat roads can place more demand on your engine, transmission and brakes on long Pennsylvania grades.

  • Consider torque, not horsepower alone.
  • Leave plenty of towing margin.
  • Use appropriate trailer brakes.
  • Pay attention to loaded trailer weight.

Pennsylvania Winters

Snow and ice make traction and vehicle control especially important. Four-wheel drive can help you get moving, but it does not eliminate the need for careful braking and proper trailer setup.

  • Consider 4WD for snow and slippery worksites.
  • Check tire condition and ratings.
  • Allow additional stopping distance.
  • Reduce speed when conditions deteriorate.

What's Your Trailer?

Choose the approximate loaded weight of your trailer and how often you tow. We'll point you toward the Chevrolet models worth considering.

Towing Questions

Before You Hitch Up, Know These Answers.

Does the engine determine towing capacity?

Engine choice is important, but it isn't the only factor. Cab configuration, drivetrain, axle ratio, wheels, trailering equipment, payload and other vehicle options can affect the actual tow rating.

Do I need a diesel Silverado?

Not necessarily. Gasoline engines can be excellent choices for occasional and moderate towing. The 3.0L Duramax becomes particularly attractive for frequent towing, highway travel and buyers who value diesel torque.

Do I need a Silverado 2500 HD?

Not automatically. A properly equipped Silverado 1500 can tow up to 13,300 pounds. If your trailer, payload requirements or towing frequency exceed what a 1500 comfortably handles, a 2500 HD may be the better choice.

Does 4WD increase towing capacity?

Not automatically. Four-wheel drive can be useful for snow, mud, boat launches and unpaved worksites, but the 4WD version isn't necessarily rated to tow more than the 2WD version. Always check the rating for the exact vehicle configuration.

What information should I bring when shopping for a tow vehicle?

Bring your trailer's GVWR, dry or empty weight, estimated loaded weight, tongue or pin weight and hitch type if available. This allows the Fairway team to help match the trailer to the appropriate Chevrolet.

Does passenger and cargo weight matter?

Yes. Towing capacity and payload capacity are different. Passengers, cargo, accessories and trailer tongue or pin weight all contribute to the load the vehicle must carry.
